Netflix so-called Parental Controls are flawed and, as a result, online child safety remains compromised when it should be paramount to all. There’s no "grey area" when it comes to this topic, I trust all parents shall agree. Unfortunately, this has remained an issue, for as many years as we’ve been a Netflix customer, including 2016 September.
ISSUE #1: I've established Profiles for each adult and child, designated the child profiles as such and assigned a Parental PIN. Yet, the app still allows children to EFFORTLESSLY toggle to an adult profile and thereby gain full access to inappropriate content.
At present, the ONLY means of prohibiting a child from accessing inappropriate content is to (1) assign a PIN on the account and (2) downgrade ALL profiles to the lowest privilege-level per the youngest member of household. Whilst this approach is completely inconvenient to older users (My List is affected and all non-PG shows are now inaccessible), the concern remains that a child STILL has access to graphics, titles and descriptive text of inappropriate content – even if inadvertently via a manual search as well as via the autonomous "suggested shows" list.
Netflix needs to: (1) prompt for PIN, when a user toggles to any non-child profile and (2) completely hide all inappropriate metadata (graphics, titles, descriptive text) from children. Until effective parental controls are implemented, it's impractical and inexcusable for Netflix to ignore this flaw which places the burden on the parent to constantly monitor their child's viewing activity.
ISSUE #2: Another related topic is the inability to crowdsource show ratings. From what I’ve read on their KB, rating data is acquired from "other sources" but why not allow adult users to up/down vote rating from within the app? As one example, "Bob's Burgers" was recently presented in my child’s suggested viewing list. I was gratefully nearby, when I overheard a character discussing a sexual topic. I quickly removed the device from my child, took note of the show title and called customer service. Point being: it would be helpful if a parent could trigger a title for pier re-review .. or, better yet, override the rating and hence permanently remove a title from their child’s access.
Knot-Happy wrote the review because of "insufficient parental controls" at Netflix. Reviewer claimed that he or she wants Netflix to offer any options to resolve the issue.
The most disappointing in user's experience was insufficient parental controls, delayed resolution of long-standing issue and weak parental controls. Author liked the most simple interface. The author asks this business to immediately contact him/ her to briefly discuss his/ her negative experience with the company.
